Senior Care
As our pets are cherished family members, witnessing their aging can be a challenging experience. Many of our clients may require assistance in addressing the new health conditions that arise as their pets grow older. The team at Floresta Animal Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for our aging patients. Just as humans do, older pets require more frequent examinations to detect early warning signs and changes in behavior as they enter their silver and golden years.
With advancing age, several special considerations must be addressed to ensure that our pets remain healthy and happy. Early detection of disease and prevention are fundamental components of senior care. We recommend routine laboratory work for all patients aged seven and older; if any concerns arise, we may suggest initiating testing earlier to isolate and address potential issues.
Dental disease is a prevalent concern among senior pets. While clinical signs may not be immediately visible, underlying issues can be present beneath the gum line. We advocate for routine dental cleanings accompanied by dental radiographs to accurately identify and rectify any concerns that may be discovered.
Dietary considerations also play a significant role as our pets transition into their golden years. Nutrition tailored for easy digestion, as well as diets designed to address specific health conditions such as kidney or liver compromise, may be recommended. As pets age and their metabolism slows, they may face obesity or, conversely, weight loss and muscle mass reduction, particularly in aging cats. Addressing these issues promptly will yield the best outcomes for their health.
